about

Traditionally, Library (or Production) Music was composed by various session musos or well-established composers (sometimes under an alias), and the tracks were subsequently owned by a record label. So then any TV, radio, or film producers had a large stock of ready-made moods from which to choose for their programmes or movies without having to pay high licence fees for the "big" names.

Often, tracks would be written deliberately to mimic a popular composer or sound of the time. Throughout the 70s and 80s, many a popular TV theme tune from different countries (especially documentaries, news programmes, etc) were Library tracks.

Since it's highly unlikely that I'll ever get a chance at scoring a TV or film, I came up with the concept of an imaginary library to which I would contribute numerous pieces, with the similar sorts of uses in mind as the original Library Music.

Some of these tracks are many years old now, and were influenced by countless evenings viewing British thriller or sci-fi shows such as Spooks, Paradox, Wire In The Blood, Being Human, etc, and observing how effective a lot of the quieter underscoring was.

In more recent years, seeing the plethora of shows on Netflix and Foxtel, I've heard some more ear-catching title themes and underscoring, and a interesting resurgence in some classic synth textures of the 70s and 80s.
